How to change the pitch or key of a song on Spotify
Open the Spotify Web Player in a browser tab, press play, then open Capo and move the Pitch dial. It works because Capo controls the audio element on the page. The desktop app is not a browser tab, so it is out of reach.
- Use open.spotify.com, not the desktop app.
- Press play, then open Capo.
- Move Pitch, or pull Speed down.
Streaming services do not offer key control, and it is not an oversight. Their job is to play a catalogue back exactly as delivered. Practising against that catalogue is a different job, and it is the one an extension can do.
It has to be the Web Player
Capo works by controlling the media element on a web page. The Spotify desktop application is not a web page in your browser, so nothing in the browser can touch it. Open open.spotify.com in a tab and everything works normally.
The same is true of SoundCloud, Bandcamp, podcast players and most embedded media: if it is HTML5 audio in a tab, it is in range.
What you would actually use it for
- Fitting a song to your voiceSet the amount from the highest sustained phrase, not the first line.
- Matching an instrumentSingle semitones until a sustained note stops clashing. Usually ±1 or ±2.
- Practising a partPull the speed down and set an A–B loop around the phrase.
For the vocal side of that, see singing a song that sits four semitones too high; for the instrumental side, working a song out by ear.
Practise with the library you already pay for.
Spotify Web, SoundCloud and Bandcamp · nothing downloadedTwo things it cannot do
It will not work in the desktop app, will not save or export anything, and will not change what other listeners hear. If a track will not respond at all, check you are on the Web Player and that audio has actually started — those two account for almost every report.
