How to learn a song by ear without naming a single note

Working a song out by ear is not recognising notes on hearing them. It is a search: guess a note, play it against the recording, listen for whether it clashes. Slowing the track and looping two seconds of it turns a hard listening problem into about forty quick yes-or-no questions.

  1. Loop two seconds. Slow it to about 0.7×.
  2. Find the lowest note by hunting on one string.
  3. Work outwards from there, one interval at a time.

What stops most people is a belief that ear players hear a note and know what it is. Most do not. What they have is a fast search: guess, compare, correct, repeated until the guess stops clashing. The speed comes from having done it thousands of times, not from a different kind of hearing.

You can run the same search slowly. It takes longer and reaches the same answer.

Ask questions the recording can answer

The only question you can reliably answer without training is does this clash? Play your guess against the recording. Two notes a semitone apart grind. Two notes the same sit still and get louder. That is the whole mechanism and it works on day one.

So do not try to identify the note. Guess, compare, and let the clash tell you which way to move.

Why one string, and not the whole neck

This is the part people skip and the part that makes it tractable. On a guitar neck the same pitch exists in four or five places, so searching all of them is a two-dimensional problem. Restrict yourself to one string and it becomes a line: too low, too high, or right. You will find any note in a handful of guesses.

Once you know what the note is, move it to whatever position is comfortable.

When the key itself is the obstacle

Some songs are hard to work out because the key lies badly on the instrument: five sharps on a guitar, or a vocal line sitting between two comfortable positions. Move the recording instead of fighting it. Pitch runs to ±12 semitones, so you can put the track into a key where the shapes are obvious, work the part out, then shift it back and relearn it in the original position.

The failure mode nobody warns you about

You will get a note right, move on, and later find the whole phrase is a semitone out. That almost always means the first note was wrong and everything after it was correct relative to the mistake. The intervals were right; the anchor was not.

Check the anchor against a long sustained note, not a passing one. Passing notes are often outside the key and make poor reference points.

The cases it does not cover

It will not give you the chords. Working out a bassline or a melody is a search over single notes; chords need you to hear three or four at once, which is genuinely harder and worth learning separately.

It will not survive a dense mix either. If the part is buried under a wall of guitars, no amount of slowing separates it. Try pulling the centre channel down first, and accept that some recordings do not come apart.
